Overview

Located in the heart of Linden, New Jersey, Los Barrilitos is a Salvadoran restaurant that delivers an authentic taste of Central America’s rich culinary heritage. This family-owned gem, run by the Carbajal brothers, Marlo and Jose, offers a welcoming, old-school atmosphere that instantly feels like a neighborhood staple. The modest space and small parking lot emphasize its local charm and intimate dining experience.

Los Barrilitos stands out primarily for its pupusas, a classic Salvadoran dish made from masa dough filled with a variety of meats, beans, cheeses, and even loroco flowers. These thick, griddled cakes come accompanied by curtido—a lightly fermented cabbage and carrot slaw with a vinegary finish—that perfectly balances the richness of the pupusas. Regular patrons often praise them for their size, authentic flavor, and ideal texture, making this a go-to spot for those seeking genuine Salvadoran comfort food.

The menu is a vibrant showcase of Salvadoran staples. Highlights include the Baleadas, which offer a flavorful twist on Honduran flatbreads, and Bandeja Paisa, a hearty platter that truly captures the essence of Central American cuisine’s diversity. Other notable dishes like Chicken Soup and Tamal de Elote bring warmth and tradition to the table, while offerings like Tostadas de Carne and Carne Guisada satisfy those craving robust, savory flavors.

For guests seeking variety beyond Salvadoran fare, Los Barrilitos also presents a selection of American-style sandwiches, such as the Barrilito Club, which combines grilled chicken, avocado, and bacon with fresh lettuce and tomatoes. The kitchen’s expertise shines through their sauteed dishes—Pork Chops and Chicken Francaise execute classic techniques with vibrant flavors.

The experience at Los Barrilitos combines affordability with generous portions, making it an excellent choice for both casual family gatherings and quick, satisfying meals on the go. The staff’s friendliness and readiness to accommodate dine-in or takeout orders enhance the welcoming vibe. While signage and menu visuals could be improved to assist first-timers, the quality and authenticity speak volumes.

Ideal for food enthusiasts curious about Salvadoran cuisine or anyone craving hearty, flavorful meals, Los Barrilitos is a standout destination within the Linden dining scene. Its dedication to traditional recipes, coupled with a warm, inviting environment, offers an enriching culinary journey worth exploring.

Pupusas!! To be honest is my favorite place to buy pupusas! Tamales de elotes are good too. The staff is really friendly. You can dine-in or call for takeout. The restaurant has a small parking lot.

What are pupusas? From the Nawat language meaning fluffy, these are masa dough cakes crossed between tamales and quesadillas filled with meat, beans, cheese, or vegetables, then griddled until golden brown and crisp. They are popular, especially in Salvadorian and Honduran cuisines. Located on East Linden Avenue in Linden, some of my colleagues placed an order for takeout at Los Barrilitos (little barrels) yesterday. Their online menu, primarily in Spanish with some English, consisted of a variety of breakfasts, appetizers, sandwiches, empanadas, dinner entrees, desserts, and specials of the day. As first-timers, it would have been great to have a picture of the meal on the menu to get an idea of what’s being offered. We decided on small chicken soup, maduros (sweet plantains), bean and cheese pupusa, rice, and pupusa special consisting of meat, bean, cheese, and loroco flowers. Upon arriving at this family-owned establishment by the Carbajal brothers, Marlo and Jose, parking could be a challenge depending on the time of day, as it’s small. The interior has an old-school vibe. We were welcomed by one of the staff, and our order was ready. The pupusas were pretty big in size, tasty with the right flavor, and not too greasy. They were traditionally accompanied by a vinegary cabbage, carrot, and onion salad called curtido. The salad is typically lightly fermented, kind of like sauerkraut. The price was economical for the amount ordered. Overall, we enjoyed our meal, as they are a popular, affordable meal perfect for a family feast but also quick enough for a snack, lunch, or dinner on the go, which we can recommend.

One type of food I've never had. The pupusa were awesome. Fried chicken tacos and baleadas were also delicious. They come with a vinegar slaw and sauce. The pics were from takeout, so don't do the food justice
